English Introduction

Brief Summary

Important note: This website is an internet tool aimed at learning about Slovakia's natural history and rising nature protection awareness, primarilly intended for young Slovak audiences. It's English edition was originally not foreseen by the project and therefore it only represents a concise exctract of the full Slovak version. As such, it has been supported by Centre for Scientific Tourism in Slovakia, that dedicates itself to the dissemination of scientific information pertaining to nature conservation and sustainable development both in Slovakia and the whole Europe.

Let Nature get her hooks into you..."

Poor understanding of the Nature's intrinsic value (not derived from man) frequently leads to a human behaviour irresponsible towards the natural environment. However, as soon as one takes into account for instance the time and forces necessary for the origin and formation of complex landscapes and ecosystems, such value would become obvious immediately.

The new internet page www.poznajachran.sk operated by the Centre of Scientific Tourism in Slovakia, therefore provides didactically apropriate, suitable and scientifically correct information about the origin of Earth, its landforms, relief and the overall natural environment formation with its main focus on Slovak nature. The illustrative power of the imagery and animations have been the guiding principle in the process of material selection and preparation.

The web page is intended mainly for secondary school and university students (such as sophomores), but all people interested in learnig more about the land which they live in are considered its valued visitors. They are able, for example, to watch animations of the Alpine folding in the area of nowadays Carpathians, individual stages of the Carpathian volcanism as well the effect of glaciers on the geomorphology of the High Tatras among other things.

There is a hope that by understanding these processes better than before the visistors would attain a new sense of appreciation for the landsccapes and natural environment resulting in their preparedness to engage in nature conservation.

This material is based on work partly supported by an FCO grant.
